Fresh Next Week at Silverman's Market: 1,000 Pints of Blueberries

Blueberries
Along Center Road, Silverman Orchard's one-acre blueberry patch will be ripe next week.
Driving down Center Road in Easton these days you can't miss the blue netting that's protecting Irv Silverman's first crop of blueberries from the birds. But the tasty fruit will soon be out of their reach, ripe and ready for baking in 4th of July blueberry pies.

Silverman expects his one-acre crop to yield 1,000 pints of berries, which will be for sale in Silverman's Country Market next week.

This is the first year Silverman's Orchard will produce blueberries. Another acre of bushes planted this year should double next year's yield, and Silverman says patrons will be able to pick their own blueberries in summer 2013. This year, he and his crew will do the picking.

Silverman says he'll be adding another new attraction to the orchard for visitors this summer. Starting after the 4th of July, Silverman and local historian and author Dan Cruson will offer scenic tractor rides with a local history lesson. Cruson and Silverman, who were classmates at Joel Barlow High School, will take visitors by tractor to the spectacular lookout atop the orchard and share educational tales about "everything from the glacier formation to Easton's Revolutionary War era history," Silverman says. He promises to keep the talks interesting and accessible to his youngest patrons.

Todd Hultquist, spokesman for the non-profit U.S. Apple Association, is celebrating this year's crop at the North Carolina Apple Festival in Hendersonville this weekend. He shares his list with Kathy Baruffi for USA TODAY of great places for hands-on fun.

“Silverman's Farm Easton, Conn. "In addition to apple picking, autumn in New England is wonderful for leaf-peeping," Hultquist says. Everybody gets a tractor ride when they go to pick apples here because the orchard is on a big hill. Buffalo, llama and deer are among the animals at the 5-acre petting zoo. Stop at the hands-on Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, before or after your visit, where you can touch sea stars, horseshoe crabs and rays (stingers removed) from nearby Long Island Sound. 203-261-3306; silvermansfarm.com
